Who Holds the Power: Founders or Investors?

There is a lot of debate surrounding who holds the power in a startup – the founders or the investors. And it’s not an easy question to answer. Each side has valid points, and it really depends on the specific situation. In this article, we’ll take a look at each side of the argument and see who really has the power in a startup.

Both founders and investors play important roles in a company. Founders are responsible for coming up with the initial idea and turning it into a reality. They are the ones who oversee the day-to-day operations and have a deep understanding of the business.

Investors, on the other hand, provide the financial backing that allows a company to grow and expand. They may not be as involved in the day-to-day operations, but they do have a say in how the company is run.

So, who really holds power in a company? It depends. In some cases, it may be the founder who has the final say. But in other cases, it may be the investors who have more control.

So what factors may determine who has more power in the company?

Money as leverage

Obviously, the investors have the money, and they’re not afraid to use it as leverage. They can easily threaten to pull their funding if they don’t get what they want, and that can be a very powerful bargaining chip. However, founders also have something that investors want – namely, equity in the company. So while investors may have the upper hand in terms of funding, founders have the upper hand in terms of ownership.


Investors usually have a lot more experience than founders, and they can use that to their advantage. They know how the game is played, and they know what it takes to succeed. On the other hand, founders may be more idealistic and less experienced. They may not have the same realistic view of the business world that investors do.


It’s no secret that knowledge is power. In any organization, the people who have the most knowledge are usually the ones who are in the most powerful positions. That’s because knowledge allows you to make better decisions, solve problems more effectively, and generally get things done. So whether an investor or founder has more knowledge than another in the start-up niche, can help determine who has more power over the company. 

So who really holds power in a startup? It’s hard to say. It depends on the situation, and it depends on what’s important to each side. In the end, it’s probably a combination of both. Founders need investors to provide funding, and investors need founders to provide equity. It’s a symbiotic relationship, and each side has something that the other needs.
